Why The Twitch It Deer Decoy Works I always thought that a white tail twitching action had tremendous significance for deer communication. Ever notice when hunting on a green field that the deer that are out in the field are the best indicator that other deer are approaching the field? Most of the time when I see a buck passing at 60, 70 yards and beyond, I can call to him using a grunt call, and he will usually stop and look in my direction for a few seconds, but more than half the time, he resumes his original path. For years I wondered what was going on until one day it hit me. There are lots of sounds in the woods, and some of them can be very similar to the sound made by a grunt call. Trees rubbing together in the wind is one example. Deer have learned that sounds that are similar to a grunt sound are not always made by a deer. So what do you suppose they do? They look in the direction of the sound, and expect to see a white tail twitch. If they stare for a few seconds and no tail twitch is apparent, then they probably assume that the sound was something else.
